Castelsarrasin, the town

Castelsarrasin covers 76.8 km², lies between 61 and 97 m above sea level and had 14,343 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Castelsarrasin, known during the Revolution under the name of Mont-Sarrazin, is a French commune, the sole sous-préfecture of the département of Tarn-et-Garonne and the chief town of the arrondissement of Castelsarrasin, in the région of Occitanie. The commune is also the seat of the communauté de communes Terres des confluences. The urban area of Castelsarrasin had 27,861 inhabitants in 2017, making it the 23rd urban area of the new large région of Occitanie.

A little history

The early history of the town was marked by warfare, against the Aquitains until the end of the 12th century, then the Albigensian Crusade during the first half of the 13th century. At that time, the town was administered by consuls and received its first coutumes (legal texts governing the town) in 1230. In the 14th century, religious intolerance continued to cause devastation and, in 1320, during the second crusade of the Pastoureaux, thousands of Jews were killed in the region, including 160 in Castelsarrasin alone. From 1337, the porte de Garonne had been enclosed with a wall and the tower of the avenue de Moissac rendered with a coating.
