Montech [mɔ̃tɛʃ] (in Occitan Montuèg) is a French commune in the département of Tarn-et-Garonne, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays Montalbanais, corresponding to the southern part of Quercy. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the canal latéral à la Garonne, the Garonne, the canal de Montech, the ruisseau de Larone, the ruisseau de Pantagnac, the ruisseau de Rafié, the ruisseau de Verdié, the ruisseau du Vergnet, the ruisseau de Sanguinenc and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
In 1134, at the initiative of Raymond Séradis and Alphonse Jourdain, comte de Toulouse, Montech became a fortified site, a castrum, whose function was to better protect the northern Toulouse area. Ten years before Montauban, a comtal château was built alongside which a new town was founded and which is said to have been granted a charter of customs, though the validity of the text mentioned by local scholars remains suspect to mediaevalists. To the south-east, the château was integrated into the system of fortifications that were surrounded by deep moats.
