La Suze-sur-Sarthe is a French commune, situated in the département of the Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire region, with a population of 4,693 inhabitants (known as the Suzerains). The commune forms part of the historic province of Maine, and is located in the Haut-Maine (Maine blanc).
A little history
There was undoubtedly a prehistoric human presence on the site, at least from the Neolithic period, followed by Celtic and Gallo-Roman settlement. La Suze has been known since the first half of the 11th century for its bridge over the Sarthe, the first after those of Le Mans. This communication function, of obvious strategic and commercial importance, led to the construction of a château to control the crossing and collect the associated tolls. The first châtelain and seigneurial family, which appeared in the first half of the 11th century, died out around 1100 into the family of Craon-Sablé, who were succeeded in 1312 by their distant cousins of the senior branch of the Craon.
