La Mothe-Saint-Héray (in Poitevin La Moute-Sént-Érae) is a French commune, situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
A little history
In the place of La Mothe-Saint-Héray there once spread an ancient lake, known as the Lac Vauclair, which occupied the territory as far as Saint-Maixent-l'École and Exoudun. This lake gradually disappeared by the 5th century. Evidence of prehistoric human life was discovered from 1840 onwards. Following the discoveries of the Tumulus de Bougon, excavations were carried out at la Villedieu-de-Comblé and led to the discovery of a Neolithic burial site as well as a skeleton. These excavations brought to light fragments of pottery and flint tools, including an arrowhead.
