La Machine is a French commune situated in the département de la Nièvre, in the région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The commune is known for its history of five centuries of coal mining (from the 13th century to 1974), and takes its name from a baritel installed by workers from Liège in 1689 to bring coal back up to the surface. Its inhabitants are known as the Machinois and the Machinoises.
A little history
La Machine is known for its coal mines, which allowed it to be a prosperous commune until the 1970s (the last shaft, known as « des Minimes », was closed in 1974). It was an economic driving force for the region. From 1869 to 1946, the houillère de La Machine, under the control of the compagnie Schneider, enjoyed great prosperity and the development of the town accelerated. At the time of nationalisation, the town had more than 6,000 inhabitants, a quarter of whom were employed in the mine.
