La Garnache is a French commune located in the département of Vendée, in the région of Pays de la Loire. Today a small town of just over 5,000 inhabitants, it was, until the Wars of Religion of the 16th and 17th centuries, a feared seigneury and the most important town in this area of the north-west of present-day Vendée.
A little history
Around 1,000 years before our era, the territory of La Garnache was situated on a promontory whose furthest point was Beauvoir-sur-Mer, surrounded by the marshes of Bouin to the north and Sallertaine to the south. Two centuries BC, the Gaulish tribe of the Agnutes settled in the pays de Retz, which was then covered by immense forests. They were sailors, farmers and livestock breeders.
