A little history
The town of La Châtaigneraie owes its name to the family of its first lords, the Chasteigner. The seigneury of La Châtaigneraie was part of the barony of Mervent-Vouvant. The Chasteigner family had a castle built and soon the parish, which had until then been known as Saint Christophe du bois, became known under the name Castaneria, the original form of the present-day La Châtaigneraie. From the 14th to the 17th century it was in the hands of the family de Vivonne before briefly becoming the possession of François de La Rochefoucauld, the author of the Maximes.
