This commune, through which the Loir flows, lives principally from agriculture and tourism. A few industries remain there, such as the Rustin factory, named after the inventor of the rustine.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, the seigneury of La Chartre (also known as La Châtre or Chartres-sur-le-Loir) belonged to the barons de Mayenne (along with Gorron and Lassay), at least since Geoffroy II and his wife Mahaut/Mathilde d'Alluyes-au-Perche-Gouët, as the latter is referred to as dame de La Chartre in 1090, before passing to the comtes de Vendôme-Montoire (Pierre Ier, born around 1200 and died on crusade in 1249 in Cyprus, married to Jeanne Gervaise de Mayenne (died 1246), daughter of Juhel III). More particularly to the branch descended from a younger son of comte Pierre and Jeanne de Mayenne, Geoffroy de Vendôme, who died after 1311, seigneur de La Chartre, Gorron and Lassay.
