La Bruffière is a French commune situated in the département of Vendée, in the région of Pays de la Loire. Before the creation of the départements in 1789, La Bruffière formed part of the marches common to Bretagne and Poitou in temporal terms, and to Bretagne (diocese of Nantes) in spiritual terms. Its inhabitants are called Bruffièriens and Bruffièriennes.
A little history
During the early Middle Ages, incessant disputes set Bretons, Franks and Visigoths against one another. These led, in 983, to the creation of "buffer" zones, the Marches Bretagne-Poitou. Between Bretagne and Poitou, the hautes marches communes were made up of Cugand, Boussay, Gétigné and La Bruffière, their capital until the French Revolution of 1789. In 1287, the village was organised around the dwelling [which one?], still present today, of the "de Coucy" family.
