La Barre-de-Monts is a commune in the centre-west of France, situated on the Côte de Lumière, in the département of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire region. Its inhabitants are known as Barriens.
A little history
Erected as a parish in 1812, the commune of La Barre-de-Monts was erected as a distinct civil registration section in 1842, then was created in 1853 by the detachment of a part of that of Notre-Dame-de-Monts. In 1896, La Barre-de-Monts was served by the metre-gauge railway line coming from Challans and heading towards Fromentine. This line was granted to the Société du chemin de fer sur route de Challans à Fromentine. The Beauvoir-sur-Mer to Fromentine section of this rail link was to be incorporated, in 1923, into the Bourgneuf to Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie line (extended towards Les Sables-d'Olonne in 1925).
