It is often considered, wrongly, to be part of the town of Saint-Denis. Its area and population make it one of the smallest communes in Seine-Saint-Denis.
A little history
The history of L'Île-Saint-Denis dates back to the Middle Ages, with the first traces of human occupation on the fluvial island situated on the Seine. In the 10th century, Bouchard le Barbu owned the central island, then called Isle du Chastelier, on which he had had a fortress built whose garrison troubled the surrounding area. He ransomed all the vessels that passed in the vicinity, and in particular those of the monks of the abbaye de Saint-Denis, which gave rise to quarrels. To put an end to their disputes, King Robert le Pieux proposed to Bouchard le Barbu the exchange of the Île de Châtelet[à vérifier] for the royal land of Montmorency.
