L'Île-d'Yeu is a French commune situated in the département of Vendée, in the région of Pays de la Loire. It is an island commune, made up of the île d'Yeu, one of the fifteen îles du Ponant. It also forms the canton of L'Île-d'Yeu.
A little history
The island has been occupied since the Neolithic period, as attested by the numerous megaliths found on the island (dolmens, menhirs) and the presence of many cup-marked stones, the two sometimes being associated with one another, as well as the existence of two prehistoric promontory forts (la Tranche, Ker Daniau). The only means of access being by sea, this implied the use of vessels to reach the mainland. It is likely that crossings were made from the northern coast, which is lower-lying. This may explain the strong megalithic presence in that part of the island.
