L'Île-Bouchard is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. It has been a place of Catholic pilgrimage since Marian apparitions in 1947. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Vienne, the Manse, the Ruau and two small watercourses.
A little history
A lord by the name of Bouchard laid the foundations of a castrum on the island around 885. He led, amongst other things, an expedition tasked with bringing back to Touraine the relics of Saint Martin, which were held in the church at Auxerre. The successors of Bouchard over the lordships of l'Isle, Rivarennes and Bréhémont endured through the centuries, including his direct descendants until around 1629 (the family of L'Isle-Bouchard, absorbed into the La Trémoïlle family through the marriage of the heiress Catherine to Georges de La Trémoille in 1427). The barony of L'Ile-Boucherd was then ceded to Richelieu, and the ducs de Richelieu kept it until the Revolution as part of their duché-pairie de Richelieu.
