Jouy-en-Josas [ʒwi ɑ̃ ʒozas] is a French commune situated in the département of Yvelines in the Île-de-France region, along the valley of the Bièvre, to the north of the plateau de Saclay and the vallée de Chevreuse, and to the south of Versailles. Jouy-en-Josas is distinguished by its exceptional natural surroundings, with notably the forêt de Versailles which borders the commune to the north and the vallée de la Bièvre which runs through Jouy from one end to the other.
A little history
Josas was the name of one of the two vici making up the ancient pays de Hurepoix, the other being to the north-east the pays de Châtres (pagus Castrensis), now known as Arpajon. It was an ecclesiastical division, one of the three (archdeaconries) of the évêché de Paris, attested in the Latinised form Archidiaconus Josiacensis in 1352 and the French form Josays in 1525. The other two archdeacons were those of Paris and Brie, and they held the highest ranks in the chapter of the cathedral, after the dean and the grand chantre. The archdeaconry of Josas comprised two deaneries, that of Châteaufort and that of Montlhéry.
