Jarny is a French commune situated in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle, in Lorraine, in the Grand Est region. It owes its development to the iron mines (Jarny, Droitaumont, Giraumont) and in their wake to the railway (the Conflans-Jarny marshalling yard), the mines generating significant volumes of ore, the Lorraine minette, to be transported to the blast furnaces.
A little history
Since the Middle Ages, Droitaumont and Jarny have been two lordships linked to the family de Gourcy, or de Gorcy, who settled there very early. The commune's coat of arms is borrowed from them, with a variation (silver annulets) to distinguish it from the Gorcy coat of arms (gold annulets). This family was very powerful and influential at the court of Lorraine, as attested by its illustrious alliances (Lignéville, Manderscheid, Merode).
