Gy is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Saône, in Franche-Comté, in the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are called Gylois and Gyloises. It holds the label Cité de Caractère.
A little history
The occupation (in the archaeological sense of the term) of Gy has been attested since the Gallo-Roman period, owing to the discovery of the substructures of a Gallo-Roman villa near the current place de la République. In 1093, the Count of Burgundy, Renaud, sold his lands in the pays gyssois to his brother Hugues, Archbishop of Besançon. From the 12th century onwards, an upper town developed between the château and the église Saint-Symphorien, referred to as a bourg as early as 1246. Fortifications are attested there in 1273 and market halls in 1286.
