Guérigny is a French commune situated in the département de la Nièvre, in the région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is twinned with the Belgian town of Meix-devant-Virton. The commune was awarded the label Cité de Caractère de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in 2021.
A little history
Originally, Guérigny was merely a small market town by the name of Villa-Variniacum until the abbé Hermod, the owner of the place, donated it to his nephew Hériman (Herimanus), Bishop of Nevers. In turn, in 841, he offered the land he had inherited to the canons of his chapter residing in Nevers. At first, the place was occupied only by a few wooden huts thatched with straw to shelter the workers responsible for maintaining the estate of the canons of Saint-Cyr. Feudal lords later settled there with families seeking protection.
