A little history
The history of Grenade begins during the late Middle Ages. Its foundation forms part of a movement to create bastides in the vicomté de Marsan between the 13th century (Saint-Gein, around 1284) and the 14th century (Cazères in 1314, Hontanx in 1331). Grenade is a bastide founded on 2 May 1322 by paréage between the comtesse Jeanne d'Artois, niece of King Louis IX (Saint Louis), and Jean de Chanauld, commandeur of the commanderie de Saint-Antoine de Goloni, at Bats. Jeanne d'Artois was also the widow of the comte Gaston Ier de Foix-Béarn and the guardian of his son, Gaston II de Foix-Béarn, vicomte de Marsan.
