Grayan-et-l'Hôpital (Graian e l'Espitau in Gascon) is a commune in the South-West of France, in the département of Gironde (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Grayanais.
A little history
The commune is situated on the lébade, the old main road from Bordeaux to Soulac, and on the voie de Soulac, a former secondary route of the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrimage. Acts dating from 1330 mentioned, within the parish of Saint-Pierre de Grayan, the villages of Artras and Cassac, which have since disappeared. L'Hôpital de Grayan, known in the 17th century under the name of l'Hospitalet, was a lodging welcoming pilgrims coming from Saintonge. It dated from the 12th century but no longer existed by the 18th century.
