Human presence on the territory of the commune has been attested since the Neolithic period, notably in the grotte du Géant. The town of Gondreville is most certainly one of the oldest localities in the pays de Lorraine. According to H. Lepage, authentic documents attest to the existence of this locality as early as the 7th century, and establish that there was a palace in which several Frankish kings resided.
