Genillé, the town

Genillé covers 63.1 km², lies between 71 and 144 m above sea level and had 1,503 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Genillé (pronounced [ʒənije]) is a French commune in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Inhabited since the Neolithic period, this rural village in the valley of the Indrois was an important vicus attested as far back as the Merovingian era, during which coins were minted there. The history of the parish is marked by two figures, Adam Fumée, a close adviser to Charles VII, Louis XI and then Charles VIII in the second half of the 15th century, and then Michel de Marolles in the 17th century, abbé de Villeloin, great collector, man of letters and of salons.

A little history

The earliest traces of human presence in the commune of Genillé take the form of tools, bifaces dated to the Acheulean period, some 350,000 years ago. These discoveries, made at the end of the 19th century, concern two sites in the valley of the Indrois and a third on the plateau. Given the rarity of these remains, it is difficult to determine whether the populations who left them were sedentary or nomadic. Some 6,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period, new populations settled on the site of Genillé.
