Genay is a French commune situated in the métropole de Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are called the Ganathains.
A little history
Formerly known as Joannacum and then Jaennac, the parish of Genay belonged to the Franc-Lyonnais, of which it was for a time the capital. The town suffered during the Hundred Years' War, being notably razed and its inhabitants put to the sword in 1443 by bands of idle routiers who were ravaging the area. Having become a commune of the département de l'Ain in 1790, it was then part of the canton de Trévoux. On 1st January 1968, it was attached to the département du Rhône and the canton de Neuville-sur-Saône.
