Garches (pronounced [ɡaʁʃ]) is a French commune in the département of Hauts-de-Seine in the Île-de-France region. The commune is affluent and residential, comprising numerous detached houses. Garches is distinguished by the international reputation of the Hôpital Raymond-Poincaré, which specialises in traumatology, road accidents and the rehabilitation of physically disabled people.
A little history
Traces of prehistoric settlements from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods were recorded in the early twentieth century in a sand quarry. The village is first mentioned in 1170. The church founded by Robert de la Marche was, in 1297, the first to be dedicated to saint Louis, who had been canonised one year earlier. The territory of Villeneuve-l'Étang, now known as Marnes-la-Coquette, was separated from Garches in 1702.
