A little history
Saint Colomban, an Irish monk and founder of numerous abbeys across Europe, founded the priory of Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil at the same time as the abbaye de Luxeuil-les-Bains, around the year 595, on account of the many springs he found there. It was he who gave the village the name of Fontanas. The monks were forced to leave the priory in 1791 and the buildings were sold as national property. In the 18th century, industrial establishments were numerous, including flour mills, brickworks, tileries, lime kilns, pottery works and starch factories. A quarry of variegated sandstone of excellent quality also served Bartholdi for the creation of his famous Lion de Belfort.
