Eysines (ou) is a commune in the South-West of France, in the département of Gironde, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is part of the north-west agglomeration of Bordeaux, of Bordeaux Métropole, of the parc intercommunal des Jalles and of the syndicat mixte du parc naturel régional Médoc. The commune of Eysines (official name since 1801) is situated in the centre-west of the département, 8 km as the crow flies to the north-west of the commune of Bordeaux and 44 km from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
A little history
The early discovery (in 1877) of a Bronze Age halberd, in a protohistoric tumulus at the lieu-dit Gleyse, bears witness to the commercial relations maintained with the Médoc and perhaps Ireland. The route of a lébade linking Bordeaux to Soulac is attested as far as the crossing of the Jalle at Jalepont. This overland route is characterised by the same method of construction as the coastal Roman road of the Landes, but archaeological dating evidence is lacking. The Romanesque or Gothic church of Saint-Martin and its cemetery were situated at what is now the corner of the rue de la Pompe and the route du Médoc, on the site of the present-day place du 4 septembre.
