Esvres, the town
Esvres covers 35.9 km², lies between 52 and 96 m above sea level and had 6,294 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Esvres (pronounced [ɛvʁ]), also known as Esvres-sur-Indre, is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. The territory of Esvres bears traces of human occupation since the Palaeolithic. It is above all in the 2nd century BC.
A little history
Stone tools (including hand axes) bear witness to occupation on the communal territory, notably at the lieu-dits La Haute-Cour and Vaugrignon, from the early Palaeolithic onwards. These various tools appear to have been made locally. Laminar debitage cores (« livres de beurre ») attributable to the Pressignian culture have also been found on the same sites. These may have been nomadic groups that made simple stops on the territory. Neolithic sandstone millstones have been found at La Haute-Cour.
