A little history
The territory of Esbly is a site of ancient occupation. The uncovering of Celtic tombs and coins belonging to the Belgian people of the Leici, bearing on one side the head of a boar and on the other a human head, indicates that the Celts lived there as early as the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Until the 12th century, the locality came under the archbishopric of Sens and its lordship under the abbaye de Saint-Germain-Des-Prés, which owned the territory of Saint-Germain-Les-Couilly within which Ely was encompassed at Montry. A chapel was erected in 1185 by the bishop of Meaux, Simon de Lizy, where a chaplain would come to officiate on Sundays.
