A little history
The oldest document attesting to a commandery established at Élancourt is a confirmation by Arnaud de la Ferté, lord of Villepreux, of the donation made by his vassal Dreux de Villette to the order of the Temple. This charter is dated to the episcopate of Jean de Salisbury, Bishop of Chartres from 1176 to 1180, which means that the commandery already existed by that date. It was not until September 1206 that the name "de la Villedieu de Maurepas" was mentioned for the first time, in a deed of agreement between the Templars and the abbaye de Saint-Denis.
