Duras covers 20.2 km², lies between 28 and 128 m above sea level and had 1,208 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Duras [dyʁas] is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Lot-et-Garonne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Duras is a rural market town with 1,208 inhabitants in 2023. The commune is situated in the arrondissement of Marmande and forms part of the communauté de communes du Pays de Duras, of which it is the seat.
A little history
The town of Duras was founded in 1137 or shortly afterwards, when the Viscount of Bezaume (probably Guillaume-Amanieu de Gabardan) sacked the neighbouring town of Saint-Eyrard (oc), which was dependent on the Benedictine abbey of La Réole, and forced its population to relocate near his castle (from which it is inferred that the castle already existed). Between 1137 and 1233, the date of the mention of a prior de Duras, the priory of Saint-Eyrard, a possession of the abbey of La Réole, was also transferred to Duras. This place gave its name to a branch of the house of Durfort. It was elevated to a marquisate in 1609 and to the duché de Duras in 1689.
