A little history
The current town of Dieulouard succeeded the Gallo-Roman settlement of Scarpone or Scarponne, situated on an island in the Moselle, on the border between the territory of the Médiomatriques and that of the Leuques, where the Roman road from Metz to Reims via Nasium crossed the Moselle to reach Toul. Although this point remains debated, it is generally accepted that the Leuques were at the origin of the founding of Scarpone, which gave its name to the porte Serpenoise in Metz. In the Roman period, Scarpone was part of the province of Gaule Belgique, whose capital was Durocortorum (Reims), then of the province of Belgique Première, whose capital was Augusta Treverorum (Trèves).
