Descartes covers 38.1 km², lies between 37 and 121 m above sea level and had 3,369 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Descartes is a French commune in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Creuse, the Esves and various other small watercourses. The commune has a natural zone of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Occupied since the Palaeolithic era, the territory of the commune regularly yields flint tools coming from the neighbouring commune of Grand-Pressigny. At the end of the first millennium, a castle was built there, of which only the foundations remain in the current public garden. It is not known whether it was actually a stone castle or a simple motte-and-bailey. According to the scholar Jean-Louis Chalmel, subject to confirmation, the first lords of La Haye are thought to have descended from Adalaud/Adalard and his son Garnier de Loches, himself the father of Roscille, the wife of Foulques le Roux d'Anjou, in the tenth century.
