Cugand is a former French commune situated in the département of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire region. Before the creation of the départements, under the kingdom of France, the parish of Cugand was part of the marches Bretagne-Poitou (common possession) and, in spiritual terms, of Bretagne (diocese of Nantes). On 1 January 2025, the commune of Cugand merged with its neighbour La Bernardière to form the new commune of Cugand-la-Bernardière.
A little history
The region was initially part of the territory of the Gaulish tribe of the Pictons. From these ancient times, only a few remains would survive, the piles of a bridge at the bottom of the Sèvre at Bas-Noyer (the Roman road from Durivum (Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu) to Angers) and flagstones in a farmhouse at l'Ambenière (the Roman road from Durivum to Clichio (Clisson)). Originally more coherent in all likelihood, the common marches of Poitou and Bretagne split in the 15th century into several pieces.
