Coutras (pronounced [kutʁa]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of the Gironde in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Coutrassiens or Coutrillons. From the earliest traces of civilisation in the canton, Coutras occupies a strategic geographical position, at the crossroads of the roads from Angoulême or Périgueux and Bordeaux.
A little history
Multiple discoveries of flint, whether knapped or polished, bear witness to a prehistoric human settlement across the whole of the cantonal territory. Coutras, at the confluence of rivers, also owes its development to its strategic position at the crossroads of ancient tracks, the roads from Angoulême and Périgueux to Bordeaux. Peutinger includes Corterate in his table of the 2nd century, connected by a secondary Roman road to Brossac, which still retains to this day some traces of the Gallo-Roman constructions of a serae (a horse relay station). Coutras is thought to derive from the Gaulish Corterat, meaning "small fortress" (Corte meaning small, short, and Rate meaning fortress).
