A little history
According to legend, Clairac was founded by Charlemagne, on his return from the war waged in Spain against the Saracens. The Chronique saintongeaise places one of the battles won by Charlemagne a stone's throw from the confluence of the Lot and the Garonne, at the foot of the Pech de Bère. The Chronique de Turpin (12th century) tells us, "During the battle, the sun having stopped at the prayer of Charlemagne, this prince, in memory of this miracle, founded the abbaye de Clairac, so named because the Lord had lengthened and brightened the day"… Clara luce. Even today, Lux clareat is the battle cry of Clairac and recalls this supposed imperial birth.
