A little history
The word Cilaos is thought to derive from the Malagasy Tsy ilaozana, which means "(a place) one does not abandon". In reference to this supposed origin, the commune's motto is "Cilaos, on y revient toujours". Nevertheless, according to certain historians, the word Cilaos may instead have its origins in the name of a Malagasy slave named Tsilaos, who is said to have taken refuge in this cirque. It was indeed through these runaway "marron" slaves (or "noirs marrons") that Cilaos was first populated in the 18th century.
