A little history
The comte Thibaut IV de Blois erected a cylindrical keep on a motte around 1140 (after the earlier castle had been burned down). A masonry enclosure 170 metres long by 9 metres wide surrounds it. Dominating the town that grew up at its foot, the site was protected on three of its sides by a moat, with the southern side bordering the cliff. Access to the castle was from the east.
