Chassieu, the town
Chassieu covers 11.6 km², lies between 190 and 251 m above sea level and had 11,208 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Chassieu is a French commune situated in the métropole de Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It forms a commune in the periurban belt to the east of the central city. Its inhabitants are called the Chasselands.
A little history
The most probable origin of the name Chassieu is that during the Gallo-Roman period, this territory bore the name Cassiacum (Cassius + -acum meaning the estate of Cassius, Cassius being an attested Gallo-Roman family name). The name may have evolved over the centuries under Latin and then Franco-Provençal influence. Excavations carried out by the Inrap at Chassieu, Genas, Décines-Charpieu and Meyzieu (as well as at other nearby communes) have revealed significant human occupation that until now was only attested by a few flints, tiles and objects found here and there, and by some cadastral writings.
