Historiquement, la commune était rattachée à l'ancienne province du Dauphiné mais aussi au comté de Sermorens, domaine situé au débouché de la cluse de l'Isère, au pied du massif de la Chartreuse et à l'extrémité du diocèse de Vienne. Au XXIe siècle, Charnècles fait partie du canton de Tullins ainsi qu'à la Communauté d'agglomération du Pays voironnais, au même titre que trente autres communes.
