A little history
During Prehistory, humans left their mark, as evidenced by the discovery at la Treille-de-La-Charlière of two lithic assemblages, one comprising 3 pieces dating from the Middle Palaeolithic, the other consisting of 11 Neolithic pieces. There was also the Dolmen de Pierre Brune, a megalithic site that has since disappeared, as well as caves. During Antiquity, the territory of the commune stood at the crossroads of Roman roads, running from Fontenay-le-Comte to the port of la Chaume from east to west, and from Nantes to Saintes from north to south. Chantonnay is thought to take its name from a Roman camp known as the camp d'Antoine, "campus antonini".
