Champlitte (pronounced [ʃɑ̃plit] or [ʃɑ̃lit], in franc-comtois Champitre) is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Saône, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Champlitte is composed of several associated communes, Le Prélot (since 1805), Leffond, Montarlot-lès-Champlitte, Margilley, Neuvelle-lès-Champlitte and Champlitte-la-Ville (since 1972) and Frettes (since 1974). The commune of Champlitte is the largest in the département and in Franche-Comté, the second largest in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the 96th largest commune in France.

A little history

The Champlitte region was occupied very early, as evidence of human presence dating back 400,000 years before our era has been found. Traces of occupation are numerous in the area, particularly from the Middle Palaeolithic onwards. During the Gallo-Roman period, Champlitte lay close to two secondary Roman roads, one running from Langres to Besançon, and the other from Danmartin to Langres. Several Gallo-Roman villas and a monetary hoard from the 3rd century confirm that the place was inhabited.
