Chaillé-les-Marais is a French commune situated in the département of Vendée, in the Pays de la Loire region. A commune in the natural region of the Marais poitevin, it is included in the parc naturel régional du marais poitevin.
A little history
Chaillé-les-Marais, formerly known as île Carriot, was originally a limestone islet situated within a vast marine gulf named the Golfe des Pictons, as were certain neighbouring communes. This territory, swept by the ocean waves, also comprised two other smaller islets, Aisne and Le Sableau. The topographic configuration of this island suggests that it was home to a port as far back as the Roman era. Over the centuries that followed, the gradual retreats of the sea gave way to vast unwholesome marshes as well as high cliffs, characteristics that persist to this day.
