Cestas (pronounced [sɛstas]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the south-west suburbs of Bordeaux, in the département of the Gironde, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Cestadais. It is a member of the communauté de communes Jalle Eau Bourde.
A little history
The oldest discovery dates from Protohistory, consisting of bronze axes preserved at the Musée d'Aquitaine, found in 1897 beneath an oak tree by woodcutters at the lieu-dit les Gleyzes. At the end of the chemin du Pas du Luc, a tumulus (undated) was recorded by the abbé Jaubert, at the Bouchon du Luc (from the Latin lucus, sacred wood), at the confluence of the Eau Bourde and the ruisseau du Pas du Gros, with a circumference of approximately one hundred geometric paces. This mound rises nearly five feet above the rest of the surrounding countryside. A windmill was built on the hillock in the 18th century.
