Ceaucé, the town
Ceaucé covers 41.5 km², lies between 100 and 262 m above sea level and had 1,165 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Ceaucé (pronounced [sose]), known as Céaucé, is a French commune situated in the Orne department in the Normandie region, with a population of 1,165 inhabitants. The commune has the distinction of belonging to both the historic provinces of Maine and Normandie in the pays du Passais. A mixed commune situated half in the Orne and half in the Mayenne after the Revolution, it was finally attached entirely to the Orne in 1831.
A little history
The history of Ceaucé is largely intertwined with the history of the Passais. A quarter gold stater was discovered there. Ceaucé is probably the oldest and principal village (vicus) of the Passais throughout the early Middle Ages, until the fortresses of Domfront and La Ferté Macé were erected in the 11th century. The development of an urban settlement at this location is explained by the passage of the ancient Roman road linking the towns of Jublains and Vieux, which probably marked the eastern boundary of the commune.
