Caylus, the town
Caylus covers 97.5 km², lies between 170 and 385 m above sea level and had 1,445 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Caylus, pronounced [kajlys] locally, formerly known as Caylus-Bonnette, is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Tarn-et-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a geological, historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the causse de Caylus, to the south of the causse de Limogne, occupying a crossroads position on the border of Quercy and Rouergue. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Bonnette, the Seye, the ruisseau de Laval, the ruisseau de Poux Nègre, the ruisseau de Sietges and various other small watercourses.
A little history
A castrum already existed before 1176 and belonged to Armand and Bertrand de Montpesat. It was exchanged that year for the lordships and châteaux of Montpezat-de-Quercy and Monclar-de-Quercy and became the possession of Count Raymond V de Toulouse. The town was taken by Simon de Montfort in 1211, burned down, and then endured a second siege the following year. In 1227 the Count of Toulouse installed the Templars at Lacapelle Livron.
