A little history
It was on a damp, marshy site, near a meander of the Lot, that a priory was founded at an unknown date, around which a first settlement took hold that could have constituted a sauveté. In the 13th century the cluster of dwellings around the castle on the bank of the river was already called Castelmoron (Castiel de Mauron, Froissart, Castromorone, Valéri 1320; Castro-Mauronis, hommages de 1259). It should be noted that none of these names incorporates the Latin word mariscus or palus, nor the Germanic word marisk, which are the etymological roots of the word marais.
