Carrières-sur-Seine is a commune in the département of Yvelines, in the Île-de-France region, situated approximately six kilometres from Paris and bordering Chatou. The commune was the centre of intense stone-quarrying activity until the mid-twentieth century, hence its name. Its inhabitants are called the Carrillonnes and Carrillons.
A little history
It was certainly affected by the Viking incursion when they sailed up the Seine as far as Paris in 845. It was in 1137, however, that the hamlet was officially founded by Suger, abbot of Saint-Denis in the twelfth century, in order to increase the lands and revenues of the abbey. The parchment bearing the act that grants to the office of treasurer of Saint-Denis the provostship of Berneval-en-Caux as well as the village of Carrières-Saint-Denis is preserved in the Archives nationales. Thus, as treasurer of the claustral office, Étienne was the first lord of the village, before Christian succeeded him two years later.
