Brignais was formerly part of the Jarez. The town was situated on the route royale from Lyon to Saint-Étienne (the present-day rue du Général-de-Gaulle). The current pont vieux made it possible to cross the Garon. During the Hundred Years War, Brignais was the scene of the bataille de Brignais, on 6 April 1362, between the royal ost of Jean II le Bon commanded by Jacques Ier de Bourbon, comte de la Marche and connétable de France, on one side, and the idle grandes compagnies of mercenaries on the other, who inflicted a severe defeat on the royal army.
