Brétignolles-sur-Mer (pronounced [bʁetiɲɔl syʁ mɛʁ]) is a commune in the centre-west of France, situated on the côte de Lumière, in the département of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire region.
A little history
The commune contains on its territory the remains of prehistoric life and settlement, revealed by the discovery of pottery, flint and megaliths dating back more than 5,000 years. On the beach of la Parée, peat fields in which very ancient tree trunks and roots can be made out bear witness to the existence of an ancient forest submerged by the sea. The Celts and the Pictons colonised the territory of Brétignolles at the beginning of our era, before the arrival of the Romans. Subsequently, in the 9th century, the Normans made their appearance, followed by the English in 1154.
