A little history
Traces of a kiln from a Gallo-Roman metallurgical establishment were found on the road leading towards Lay-Saint-Christophe, including a large block of iron weighing 600 kg (see figure). Three Gallo-Roman villas have been identified. One (villa ouest) stands on the site of the current communal house (the former presbytery), another (villa est) is near the Étang de Merrey, and a third (villa nord) is at the lieu-dit les Narvannes, which today lies within the communal territory of Custines. The second part of the commune's name comes from its abbey of canonesses or "dames", founded by saint Gauzelin.
