Bourgueil [buʁɡœj] is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Authion, the Vieil Authion, the Lane, the boire du Bâtiment, the Baignoux, the ruisseau de Gravot and various other small watercourses. Included in the parc naturel régional Loire-Anjou-Touraine, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of three Natura 2000 sites and five natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
An integral part of the province of Anjou and its history, the region of Bourgueil (including the estate of the château de Gizeux and as far as Château-la-Vallière) was attached in 1790 to the brand new département of Indre-et-Loire. In 1343, salt became a state monopoly by an ordinance of King Philippe VI de Valois, who established the gabelle, the tax on salt. Anjou was part of the so-called grande gabelle lands and comprised sixteen special tribunals or greniers à sel, including that of Bourgueil. On 24 May 1589, Duplessis-Mornay, governor of Saumur (1589–1621), did not merely command the town of Saumur. He took charge of a special government that was detached from Anjou.
